Who Writes the Logbook

A small, independent crew who remember being frightened on their first day and want yours to go better. We sell no boats, run no courses and take no payment for recommendations.

Lead writer

Tom Penrose

Former dinghy instructor who has taught on cold Cornish water for decades. Writes the instructor notes, and still checks the sky before he checks the app.

Safety editor

Ruth Okafor

Volunteer safety-boat driver and club rescue organiser. Reads every entry for anything that could send a beginner out on the wrong day.

Adventures

Ellis Varga

Packrafter and coracle enthusiast who tests the odd routes, usually slowly and occasionally in circles.

How we work

Principles of the log

  • Independent. We are not affiliated with any sailing school, club, manufacturer or governing body. Organisations we mention, such as the RYA, RNLI, US Sailing, NOAA or the Met Office, are cited because they publish useful guidance.
  • Checked. Boat figures come from class associations and builders; safety guidance follows published advice from rescue and training bodies.
  • Honest about limits. Reading is not training. We encourage every beginner to take a recognised course.
  • Corrected openly. If we get something wrong, tell us and we will fix it and date the change.
